about

The tune is traditional, with the words written by Antonie Gèrin-Lajoie in 1842, after the 1837-8 Lower Canada Rebellion. Many French Canadians were banished, some to Australia. In the usage of the time, to be "Canadian" was to french by definition – it was an oxymoron to call someone an "English Canadian," those were just "les anglais."

lyrics

"Si tu vois mon pays, mon pays malheureux
Va dire à mes amis que je me souviens d'eux"
